Where did this battle take place, and more about the island of Iwo Jima.
As previously mentioned the battle took place on the island of iwo jima, but do you know where that island is and about that island? it's one of the japenese homefront islands and around 750 miles off the coast of japan. more about this island is that it is a valcanic island with very hot sand. my great grandpa served here and he told me about when they were building fox holes to sleep in they would put carboard under them so they didnt get to hot and burn through their clothes which tells you how hot the sand on the island is. the civilians were evactuated in july of 1944 and no one has lived there since. before the battle as said before the japenese prepped the island with a lot of tunnels going through it which made it very scary for the usa troops because they didnt know where they could pop out and when they would pop out which is why it took a lot of bravery. The famous picture was taken on mount seribachi which is the highest point on iwo jima.
this picture is JOE ROSENTHAL'S PICTURE OF SIX U.S. MARINES RAISING THE AMERICAN FLAG ON MOUNT SURIBACHI ON IWO JIMA. IT WAS TAKEN ON FRIDAY, FEB. 23, 1945, FIVE DAYS AFTER THE MARINES LANDED ON THE ISLAND. according to https://www.pulitzer.org
